Emma for Shopify Installation Guide

  1. To connect Emma with Shopify, head here.
  2. Enter your full Shopify URL, and click Connect your account.
  3. Follow the installation instructions. 
  4. Verify that Emma for Shopify is an app you wish to install.
  5. Authorize your Emma account by entering your Emma username and password.

  7. Choose an Emma audience group where you'd like to add your Shopify customers when they opt in to receive marketing messages from your Shopify store. If you want to, you can create a new group specifically for your Shopify customers at this point.Screen Shot 2017-11-20 at 9.42.18 AM.png
  8. Your installation is complete! Within about five minutes, you should see your Shopify customers in the Emma audience group you’ve selected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are my Shopify segments?

Shopify segments and fields will be automatically created in your Emma account if you have orders in Shopify prior to installing the integration; if there are no orders in your Shopify account at the time of installation, these segments and fields will not be created until your first order takes place.

Why isn't everyone from my Shopify account being added to my audience?

Only customers that accept marketing at the time they’re added to Shopify will be synced to your Emma audience; even if a customer later updates their settings to accept marketing, they will not be added to your Emma audience.

How does Emma handle Shopify’s mandatory webhooks related to GDPR data subject rights requests?

In response to GDPR’s data subject rights requirements, Shopify has created a few new mandatory webhooks, intended to simplify how you as a data controller act on an individual’s request to exercise their rights as a data subject. These webhooks alert any connected app whenever a GDPR request is initiated by a shop owner from within their Shopify store, and it is up to that connected app to decide whether to retrieve, modify, or delete data related to that individual.


Though we have enabled the mandatory webhook, we will not take any action to modify, return, or remove data based on the resulting notifications. GDPR is specific that we, as a data processor, should only process data according to “documented instructions from the controller.” (Article 28; 3(a)) As such, we do not believe that it is appropriate to act on instructions from another data processor engaged by a mutual customer.
